Paint takes a beating in the Colorado River valley. Summer surface temperatures, relentless ultraviolet, and blown grit during monsoon season age a finish here faster than almost anywhere else in the country. Refinishing at our auto body shop is planned around that.

Matching a finish the sun has already changed

A factory paint code describes the color as it was sprayed, not as it looks after several Arizona summers. Reds and dark blues shift noticeably, and clear coat that has begun to fail changes the appearance of the base underneath it.

We spray test cards and compare them against the vehicle in daylight rather than trusting the formula, then blend into neighboring panels so the transition falls where the eye does not look for it.

Preparation and film build

Adhesion problems usually start with preparation, not product. Panels get taken to a sound substrate, bare metal is treated, and primer goes on in stages with blocking between them.

Film thickness matters more in this climate than in most. Too thin and ultraviolet reaches the base sooner. Too heavy and the finish becomes brittle and cracks under thermal cycling between a summer afternoon and a winter night.

Complete repaints

Vehicles that have spent ten years parked outside here often reach a point where the clear has failed across the horizontal surfaces even though the body is sound. Roof, hood, and trunk lid go first. A full repaint on a mechanically good vehicle is frequently a better decision than replacing it.

Clear coat restoration and chips

Where the base is still intact, failing clear can sometimes be corrected without a complete refinish. Stone chipping along the leading edge of a hood is routine on anything that runs Highway 95 regularly.
